Actinidia arguta “Issai”. A self fertile female selection. It will produce male flowers with non viable pollen to stimulate fruit production. The hardy vines are robust and capable of producing, at maturity, +30kg of sweet smooth tender skinned grape sized fruits that you can eat as is; no peeling! Taste is also better than the fuzzy types. Very few pests or diseases. Prune in winter when dormant. A good choice for small gardens.
Mycorrhizae treated. Organically grown
Care: This is a rooted cutting. Can be slow growing for the first year or two and might benefit from a little shade and wind protection at first. But they build up steam and push out extremely vigorous growth as they get older. White fragrant blooms appear on 2 year old or older wood, so be aware of this when you prune. Its only drawbacks are: it needs a good sized strong support/arbour; and, it will cover the arbour in no time with its woody tendrils. Lovely leaves too.
Habitat; prefers deep acidic well draining soils & sunny sites. Dense water logged soils retard growth & overall plant health. When seating, add some of compost or organic material at the bottom of the transplant hole (approx. 45 cm in diameter & as deep) along with a handful of low nitrogen fertilizer. Mix with the parent soil; be aware direct fertilizer-root contact causes root burn & set back growth. Tease roots from the ball while filling the soil, tamping ever so gently. Mulch. Give supplemental water until established and during drought conditions.
Hardiness Zone: 3-8
