75 Days.  If you are looking for a larger sized green tomato other than “Green Zebra”, look no further.  This heirloom beefsteak, released in 1956-ish, is sweet and delicious with a mild tomato flavour with low acidity. Great sliced on any burger or sandwich or simply enjoyed when drizzled with olive oil and basil. Dazzling green flesh.

Very productive even in the heat dome & drought of our 2021 growing season that saw months of no rain and temps exceeding 43C.  Because of its green colour, you have to gently squeeze the fruit as those not yet ready will not yield if you are impatient. It will take on subtle yellow stripes when perfect.  The interior remains a stunning near glowing emerald green.

We roasted some up for sauce to find the green mellowed to a yellow, but blended up to make a thick sauce.

How to germinate Emerald Evergreen Tomato seeds:

Sow 5 mm deep. Keep moist; plastic cover improves success. Opt. germination temp: 18-25 C. Days to germ: 5-10. All tomatoes drop their blooms when temperatures reach 85 F or greater, so make sure your tomatoes don’t get over heated. Blossom end rot is a nutritional disorder where a lack of calcium causes the fruit to rot from the blossom end so be sure you use something like rock phosphate (22% calcium) when amending your tomato beds/growing medium. Use mulch to retain moisture or prevent water from splashing up on your plants as tomatoes hate having their foliage wet. NEVER WATER FROM ABOVE…its like someone splashing a cold bucket of water on you!
