Cucamelon / Mexican Sour Gherkin seeds

60 days. This diminutive fruit is also known as Mouse Melon or Mexican sour gherkin. Don’t let its small size fool you as it will take over a trellis in very little time and bear loads of small melon like fruits. Taste is somewhere between a cucumber and watermelon. Prolific. Great in salads (sweet or savory) and as pickles. We have it outside growing on a wire framed trellis in shallow raised beds. No disease. Cool thing about this species (Melothria scabra) is the roots can be grubbed up, potted up, stashed where it won’t freeze and replanted in the spring after the danger of frost has past. Instant gratification! Was a stable veggie of the Aztecs.

How to germinate Cucamelon (Melothria scabra) seeds:

The same way for cukes and melons. We have a quick way to germinate these beauties. Place dry seed on bed of moist loose peat moss on a labelled coffee filter. Fold the coffee filter to make a secure packet. Moisten using very warm (not hot) tap water. Place into plastic bag. Place somewhere warm 25-30C. Get your sowing medium and pots ready as you WILL be transplanting them in 3-4 days. Time your transplant kids so they’re in the garden safely after the threat of frost has past. Best as 3-4 week transplants. Heavy feeders, needs water & warmth.
