Description
An Asian Catalpa with sweetly fragrant yellow flowers and a shorter stature than its North American counter parts reaching 6-9 meters in height. If you ever wanted a smaller Catalpa, this is a good choice. The flowers are a pale yellow cream festooned with purple streaks & spots and two bold yellow stripes which, in my opinion, are landing strips to direct the bees. Large soft leaves provide shade for those hot summer days.
Like all Catalpa, the nectar flow is intense. With its large foxglove like flowers, abundant flowers and intense nectar flow, it provides a bounty for hummingbirds, butterflies and a plethora of wild and domesticated bees. The tree is alive with the buzz of wings.

How to germinate Catalpa ovata seeds
Best sown outdoors, or in a cold frame, as soon as it is ripe. Stratify stored seed for 3 weeks at 1°c and sow in spring. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in a cold frame for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
