Description

From mid August to September, white jasmine-like flowers fill the air with its sweet fragrance.  Borne in clusters, flowers emerge from within a red pointed calyx.  Once spent, a single berry forms within the calyx’s five segments which thicken and reflex backwards as the berry ripens from teal blue to dark indigo. Looking at the brilliant colour of the seed cleaning rinse water, I’m sure a wonderful intense teal dye can be made.

This open branched under story shrub hails from the dappled moist forests of Japan and China.  Soft faintly fuzzy ovate leaves smell of peanut butter when bruised.  No doubt it will put off browsing deer.  Best in dappled or semi shade.  The more sun it receives, the more water it requires. Blooms on new wood, so you can prune without worrying about removing future flowers.

How to germinate Clerodendrum trichotomum seeds:

Soak seed 24hrs.  Either sow in pots or baggie sow in well draining medium and cold stratify 90 days to break dormancy.  Will germinate in 20-60 days at 22-26C. Barely cover seed as it appears it needs light to germinate.  Sowing depths greater than 7mm will give erratic germination.  Keep seed/medium moist so a clear plastic cover is beneficial and mist daily.  It is considered to be “invasive” by some, but birds are not interested in its berries so any seedlings that do sprout tend to be around the plant base.
