Description

A renown Chinese medicinal whose berries are known as “Five Flavour Berry” or “Wu Wei Zi”.   Small fragrant white and pink flowers are followed by dense columnar clusters of red berries on female plants.  The berries are used to treat a wide array of nervous conditions while also supporting the endocrine, digestive, liver and kidney functions.  The five flavours: salty, bitter, sweet, pungent and sour all represent the five elements in TCM. The unique thing is the flavours come in sequence not simultaneously.

The plant itself is a woody vine that will spread laterally as well as up a trellis. Shiny green leaves look slightly magnolia like.  A gendered species where you need both male and female plants for fruit production.  Plants usually start bearing in 3-5 years from planting.  Loves sun in cool moist sites, but needs shade in hot summer areas.
