Description
A large fruited dark beefsteak tomato suitable for greenhouse, outside, and large containers. I am not disappointed. Rivaling “Cherokee Purple” in size, colour and taste, “Carbon” by far out produced many tomato varieties and almost matched our `Polish Giant Paste`our pantry filling tomato workhorse. Its a winner. Firm dark dense flesh, slightly more acidic than sweet but having all the complex flavours black tomatoes are known for. Plants were not pruned to a single stem. Growing conditions this year were much less than perfect where we couldn’t plant them out until mid June compared to early May. Fruits average just over 9 oz. You have to use multiple strong stakes as a single stake will just snap under the weight. Best when at the green shoulder stage.

How to germinate Carbon tomato seeds:
Sow 5 mm deep. Keep moist; plastic cover improves success. Opt. germination temp: 18-25 C. Days to germ: 5-10. All tomatoes drop their blooms when temperatures reach 85 F or greater, so make sure your tomatoes don’t get over heated. Blossom end rot is a nutritional disorder where a lack of calcium causes the fruit to rot from the blossom end so be sure you use something like rock phosphate (22% calcium) when amending your tomato beds/growing medium. Use mulch to retain moisture or prevent water from splashing up on your plants as tomatoes hate having their foliage wet…NEVER WATER FROM ABOVE…its like someone splashing a cold bucket of water on you!
