Description
This PNW native shrub’s stiff spires of bold pink densely packed flowers on the terminal ends of its cane stems. The flowers are alive with nectar seekers in its month long bloom. In the wild it can produce massive colonies via rhizomes, but can be easily managed in the garden landscape via pruning. Very few if any disease or pest problems. Prefers moist riparian areas to boggy swamps, yet it is drought tolerant Our seed comes from the same growing acidic poor soil area where Rhododendron groenlandicum, Kalmia, and Cornus canadensis are collected. Ideal for streamside erosion control and habitat restoration. Plants on rich/fertilized soils don’t produce as many flowers.

How to germinate Spiraea douglasii seed
Small seed that is best sown in pots, trays. Sow thinly by sprinkling seed on a prepared slightly fluffed up surface of moist humus rich medium. Mist well for optimum seed medium contact. Barely cover with a top dressing of similar medium. Mist well again. Never let medium dry out as this is a bog plant. Give 30-60 days cold stratification (2-4 C). Germinate at 15-20C. Mist daily. A plastic humidity retaining clear cover will enhance success. You should see sprouts in 30-60 days. Fresh seed germinates readily without cold stratification. Give seedlings strong indirect light and NEVER let the medium dry out.
