Rubus ursinus seeds (Trailing Blackberry)

Description

PNW near evergreen vine.  In mid April these vines start flowering and by late June, the harvest of these flavourful succulent fruit begins. Flavour is reminiscent of honey, strawberry and blackberry.  Perfect for juice, wine, jam, pie, etc.

In optimum conditions, fruits are near mulberry in size. Does well in ordinary soils and full hot sun.  You will be rewarded with easier picking if the vines were draped over a rail fence or something similar so you’re not stepping all over the fruit bearing vines.  It does have very fine thorns.  Takes well to being cut back to the base.  I’m sure the vines can be used for hobbies.  Gendered species.

How to germinate Rubus ursinus seeds:

Soak seed 24 hours in warm water, mix with a small quantity of coarse or sharp sand and rub between your hands to scarify the hard seed coat for a few minutes. Resoak seed for 24 hours then sow (whether you use flats or baggie sow). Warm stratify at 20-30C for 90 days, then cold stratify at 2-5 degrees C for additional 90 days. Sow evenly (and thinly) onto a humus rich medium. Barely cover with a layer of humus and mist well. give 10-15 C to germinate. Seedlings do best in a shady location in their first year. Do not let the medium dry out for the first year. For best germination sow in the fall outdoors.
