Description

A delightful dwarf shrubby mat forming PNW evergreen.  Eye catching bold pink bell like flowers.  As the species name suggests, its foliage and form does look very much like if not almost identical to Crowberry (Empetrum). Of course, crowberry produces black fruits where Mountainheath makes Kalmia like seed capsules, so there’s no mistaking who is who.  Grows alongside Bog Bilberry, Bunchberry and Crowberry.

How to germinate Phyllodoce empetriformis seeds

Prepare a well draining humus rich acidic moist medium (read the rhododendron germination medium prep). Use 10cm deep pots/plug trays. Tamp firm. Fluff up the surface enough so there’s gentle texture to it. Thinly surface sow seeds. Mist well so there’s good seed medium contact as the seeds should never dry and the emerging root has a high likelyhood of touching medium. Requires strong indirect light to germinate! Do not cover seed. A clear plastic maintains humidity cover greatly enhances success. Mist daily =  essential even during initial growing stages. Don’t give supplemental heat.  It is unknown if a brief period of cold stratification is required. Protocol is from University of Washington.
