How to germinate Magnolia delavayi seeds:
This seed is shipped dry. It germinates reliably without cold stratification. Soak 24 hours. Put seed into resealable bag of moist peat moss and give 25C. Should germinate in 30 days. Prick out seedlings and transplant preferably when seed root is about 2cm long into deep pots (as in the pic). Place pot in bag to maintain humidity. Do not shake or stir while germinating as this might rip off the tender emerging root. Newly emerging seedlings need indirect light/dappled shade at first then stronger light as they put down a larger root system. Young plants in their first year cannot withstand winter temps. Place them in an unheated sunny spot where they get light but won’t freeze.
