“Prok”, a 90 chromosome northern American persimmon. Early ripening +7cm fruits have excellent milder slightly Asian persimmon flavor. Fully ripened fruits have notes of caramel and dates. Exceptional early ripening. Being self fertile, it produces seedless fruit. To obtain seed, Szukis is used as the pollinator. Szukis, itself is an interesting cultivar with fruits developing from male flowers.
A fast growing attractive hardy tree. Will form characteristic blocky textured bark resembling an alligator hide. Fruits must be fully ripe and to earn its status as the “fruit of the gods”. Prok comes from the the Cornell University Breeding program in Amherst, NY.
American persimmon fruits are nutritionally dense having 19 out of 20 essential amino acids, high brix (+ 30% sugar), and appreciable amounts of vitamin C, beta carotene, iron, and zinc. Its young leaves make for a refreshing tea high in vitamin C.

How to germinate Stratified Diospyros virginiana “Prok” seeds
Fully stratified seed. NEVER let dry out or suffer reduced viability. Place seed in a larger baggie with at 1 cup of moist medium (we use finely screened moist shredded bark). Place baggie somewhere warm 25-30C. Germination could start in 7 days. Prick out seedlings and transplant into a larger pot where its roots can grow without restrictions. Please note being a member of the Ebony family, the roots are black except with a white growing tip. Do not be alarmed. Keep seedlings moist, provide strong indirect light and warmth for vigorous uninterrupted growth. Do not disturb seedling roots until 6 inches (15cm) tall otherwise they will sulk.
