Description
This is the first opportunity to harvest these species since 2012. A lovely multibranched shrub that hasn’t reached 2m in all the many years its been in the garden. It was a lucky find at a local horticultural society plant sale. Best to be seated where you need to see something flowering at winter’s bleakest to lift both heart and spirit.

How to germinate Daphne mezereum seed:
Scarify seed by gently rubbing the seed with a small quantity of sand between your hands for a 20-30 seconds. Use a catch plate for any falling material. Soak 18-24 hours then sow in a baggie of moist peat and warm stratify at 20 C for 90-120 days. Check baggie often for early risers and transplant accordingly. When warm stratification period is over place baggie in the fridge for 30-90 days. Again check baggie for sprouts and transplant accordingly. When cold stratification period is over, sow 6 mm deep in humus rich acidic well draining medium. Germinate at 20C. Germination can be slow and erratic for overly dry seed, thus sow fresh seed immediately for ultimate happiness.
