Description
Canada ONLY due to CFIA restrictions. Large edible golden fruit hang on sturdy stems on this small hardy trouble free tree. Single fruit can perfume an entire room with its sweet spicy scent. Great ornamental value with its 5 cm pale pink flowers. Must be cooked to be edible.
You can only make the extremely tasty Membrillo with quince. Membrillo is quince paste so succulent its perfect on toast, with roast turkey, pork, lamb and chicken, an essential for any decent cheese platter, thin slices in pies or strudel elevates the flavour to the next level. Paste properly wrapped will keep for a year in the fridge. I’ve been putting it in jars while hot as it keeps a lot better. I’m tempted to try a tucking a disc of membrillo atop brie and baking it in puff pastry. It will be the stuff of legend at any gathering.

How to germinate Cydonia oblonga seeds:
Soak seed 12 hours then sow 2-3 cm deep in compost rich medium. Tamp firm. Keep moist. Cold stratify for 90-120 days then expose to Spring like conditions (20 C) to germinate. Quick growing seedlings will be ready to plant out the same Autumn. Can be used as a pear rootstock in its second or third year. Cydonia seed is always en-capsuled in a very slippery mucilage. We try to remove this when cleaning.
