PNW flower and fruit tree. A handsome stout shrub/tree that is festooned with nectar rich flowers for a wide variety of pollinators. Its white petals provide a background for dark pink anthers held on white filaments, so it looks like they’re levitating within the corona. Good sturdy branching for birds nests. As to its genus, short sharp thorns sparsely adorn the branches. By late July-August, dark blue-purple near black fruit are ready to harvest or left for migrating birds.
First Nations used it as a medicinal for stomach & intestinal complaints (sort of an anti-cascara effect). The way the pulp solidifies when seed harvesting, yeah, it can almost substitute as temporary concrete. So be wary not to overdo any eating.
Overall form is nicely rounded with dense branching. Leaves are serrated. New twigs are red. Does well in full sun. Appears to be adaptable to many soil types thus its use in erosion control and land reclamation. Tough as nails.
