Buddleja colvilei seed (Himalayan Butterfly Bush)

$4.50

In its native regions, it can reach near tree like heights of 10m, but we have yet to see established garden specimens reaching such size.  A rare flowering shrub that will start conversations.  Discovered by Hooker in 1849, he declared it ‘the handsomest of all Himalayan shrubs.’ [1] In 1896 the species was awarded the RHS First Class Certificate (FCC),[2] given to plants ‘of outstanding excellence for exhibition’.[3]

Description

This spectacular beauty comes from the eastern Himalayas.  The crimson- pink 3 cm flowers are the largest in the genus; at first glance at the blooms you think is a Foxglove or Catalpa of sorts, but the classic Buddleja lance shaped leaves you soon realize it is not. Blooms from May to July and is much loved by bees and other nectar seekers.

Needs a protection from cold winter winds for the first few years. Can be pruned after flowering as it blooms on new wood.  If winters are colder than expected heap protective mulch around the base or wrap. Loves sunny sites and well draining soils.
