We like to keep our Acer palmatum collections as individual selections as each seed parent can throw some amazing varied seedlings of leaf shape and colour. Since most cultivated Japanese maples come from mixed A. palmatum heritages most of the kids won’t look like mom. This selection has lovely red new growth that transitions to a lovely deep green and takes on a brilliant scarlet fall colour as the last hurrah before dropping.
If you’re into bonsai and wish to have a totally unique seedling no one else has, this is the way to do it.
This tree was growing with other gorgeous red/purple leafed A. palmatum, that unfortunately, didn’t set enough viable seed for collection. By sheer proximity, no doubt cross pollination occurred. We will be growing these as well.

How to germinate Acer palmatum seed:
Fresh seed. Sow thinly at 6 mm deep in a sandy peat layer; tamp firm. Cold stratify for 60-120 days. Keep moist. Add a thin layer of fine mulch to anchor seed down. Don’t let germinating seed freeze, dry out or migrate onto the surface as this is fatal. After cold stratification period is over, expose to spring conditions to promote germination. Good indirect light is best for seedlings. Protect seed/seedlings from rodents. I prick out seedlings when dormant and grow in individual pots for first 2-3 years for best results.
