Description

This PNW late season flowering perennial prefers seaside shorelines and brackish estuaries. Extremely high salt tolerance makes it ideal for damp saline soils where precious else will grow.  Aptly named gumweed for the rosin type resin covering the plant. Prickly calax makes it deer proof. Its perfume is like an old pharmacy, it smells a little medicinal but not unpleasant.  I think this also deer proofs it.  What makes this plant a complete gem is its profuse daisy like yellow blooms and a much needed mid-late summer nectar flow for the pollinators.

How to germinate Grindelia integrifolia seeds

Soak seed 24 hours.  Surface sow thinly using a well draining medium.  Do not cover seed or barely cover as it needs light to break dormancy.  Mist daily.  Clear plastic cover improves success.  Germinates in 1-4 weeks at 20C.  2 months of cold stratification is said to improve germination rate to 75% by some propagation sources. If not what doesn’t germinate the first year will more than likely germinate the following
