Fritillaria recurva seeds (Scarlet Fritillary)

Description

Vivid scarlet and gold checkered bells suspend from thin stems above a whorl of narrow grey-green foliage. This is one of the most distinct Fritillarias and a rare jewel. This hummingbird magnet blooms in April and enters dormancy around July. Will naturalize in the right spots in any garden bed of humus rich well draining soil. Co-evolved with our climate of wet winters and dry summers and will not survive/thrive if grown any other conditions. Full sun makes plants enter dormancy early and bulbs will be small and not be as winter hardy compared to semi sun to shade grown plants.

Whether you sow in the fall or tucked in the side compartment of the fridge, all Fritillaria seed need a cold stratification period of 4 months at 2-5C. We sow our seed in the fall using a well draining medium with some coarse sand mixed in (20%). Seed is anchored down with a very thin layer of the same coarse sand used in the medium then is misted with our Skookum Grow until moist, then a 5-8mm top dressing of medium along with a thin layer of mulch. The pot is then kept outside until December then its placed in our unheated greenhouse. By mid March-early April many grass like seed leaves pop to the surface. Keep moist but never wet. Give medium strength indirect light. Never disturb seedlings or you could damage fragile roots.
