Description
The long whiskered tails of the tri-lobed maroon flowers distinguish this Asarum from its kin. Evergreen heart shaped leaves are solid green without a trace of mottling. Somewhat hairy stems. Spreads by shallow rhizomes. True to its name, it smells just like the ginger root at the grocers.

How to germinate Asarum caudatum seed:
Soak seed 24 hours. Sow seed 3 mm deep in a coarse sand sowing layer and tamp firm. Cold stratify 10-12 weeks at 2-4C. Gradually raise temp to 10 C (mimic Spring conditions) over 6 weeks. Should germinate in 30-45 days. If not, don’t despair and start germination cycle again. Seedlings must be grown at cool temp and don’t like excessive moisture or stagnant damp air. Sound complicated, but at least you don’t have to dress in a gauzy tunic and dance in the light of a full moon in a public park with the seed packet dangling from your lips.
