Description
Prolific white seeded climbing bean. History traces these back to Chinese migrants working the coal mines in Cumberland, BC (1874-1966). Dense tasty flesh almost stringless 20cm+ green beans great steamed or frozen. Bears up to frost. Needs something large & non wimpy to climb on. We Frenched, blanched and froze a good quantity for overwinter eats. Compared to frozen bush beans, Cumberland Heritage beans are firm and retained their shape. They’re far superior to any other pickled beans we’ve sampled or made previously. Needless to say, it kept us fed during the summer. Harvest when beans are 8-10 inches. Great tasty raw snacking too.

How to germinate “Cumberland Heritage” pole beans:
Start 4-6 weeks before last frost. Deep containers for good roots. Soak seed 24 hours. Germinate at 28 C for spouts in 3-5 days. Cool conditions at 2nd true leaf stage give sturdy plants. Never overwater. Meanwhile make large sturdy trellis for beans to grow on. Prefers full sun, deep fertile well-draining moist soil.
