A super hardy eastern North American native cactus for xeroscaping. Needs very well draining soil, full sun and summer heat.  Fruits have a dark pink flesh and taste like dragonfruit.

Description

This hardy cactus is native to East  North America including Ontario.  Vicious long thorns adorn the leaf pads and that is probably the only reason why it has survived deer predation.  Succulent dark pink fruits taste of Dragon fruit, another edible cactus fruit. Prefers dry, sandy soils  such as open pine woods, prairies and scrub. Very adaptable as long as critical requirements of full sun and sharp drainage are met. Aka  Indian Fig. Entire plant is edible once the spines are removed.

How to germinate Opuntia seed:

Scarify seed via abrading on sand paper. Soak in 3% hydrogen peroxide solution for 1 hour (1tbsp per 250 ml H20). Rise well; soak 24 hours in warm water; change water 2x .Roll seed in a moist, well washed kitchen scouring pad or similar. Roll seed in scouring pad, secure with rubber bands. Place in resealable clear plastic bag. Cold stratify 1-2 weeks in fridge; then give 22-28C. Germination can be erratic check every week. Prick out seedlings & sow in an appropriate cactus soil mix for its fibrous root system. Give lots of strong indirect light. Fruits taste like dragonfruit. Pollen loved by bees. Very adaptable as long as critical requirements of full sun and sharp drainage are met.
