Description

One of the hardiest evergreen palms for the landscape. Great fans of foliage on sturdy arm’s length stems making a very attractive crown atop a very sturdy straight single trunk. Dead leaves age to a nice shade of grey hang to clothe the stem but gradually erode to a few black fibrous strings. If you do trim cut stalks 15 cm from the stem never flush. Grows to 12 m tall at maturity in 100 years so plan accordingly. Bears great trusses of small yellow flowers in June/July.

  • Seed Count: 12-15
  • Collection Date: Dec 2019
  • Hardiness Zone: 7-10
  • Height and Width: 12m x 5m
  • Germination test type: germination

How to germinate Trachycarpus seeds:

Cold stratify in peat for 30 days as a germination pre-treatment for prompt germination at 20 C. Easy to grow. Use deep pots to promote its fibrous root system and a humus rich well draining medium. Over watering can lead to crown rot and fungus gnats. Mixed school of though about removing the blue skin covering the seed as it could contain germination inhibitors, but unpeeled seed germinates quite well while in cold stratification. High temps (25 C or more) inhibits germination.
