Iris douglasiana seed (Douglas’ Iris)

Description

If you love iris, you’re heart will skip a beat with this prolific blooming 45cm evergreen from the PNW. In late spring is absolutely covered with as many as 50 stunningly beautiful blooms on each plant. Colours range from deep royal purple to the palest baby blue but all have a dramatic pale yellow blotch towards the throat with dark purple ‘whisker’ streaks radiating from the throat to the falls.  Colour variations evolved in this species due to isolated populations when the area was glaciated. Most of my plants have vivid mid blue flowers with hues of violet and white wavy margins. Tough grassy leaves are never touched by deer or bunnies. Very long lived. NOT for moist or wet soils. Blooms at a younger age than all the iris I’ve grown from seed

How to germinate Iris douglasiana seeds:

Sow 10 mm deep; keep moist; stratify 6-8 weeks outdoors or refrigerator (do not freeze). Opt. germination temp: 15-20 C. Days to germ: 6-18 months. Protect from freezing in their first year; transplant just after the last frost free day is the best time as some people claim that mortality occurs when transplanting/dividing at other times. Seat carefully in final position.. Plant form is more fan like than a tufted clump-like form of Siberians, Chrysographes, Forrestii, and Sanguinea. Gorgeous!
